Solar panels explained
Solar panels are fitted to your roof and they use natural sunlight to generate electricity even on cloudy days. Your existing meter is adapted so that any spare electricity is then fed back into the national grid, your electricity provider will then pay you for this electricity. Your panels will not produce electricity at night so the electricity you use in the evening will come from the national grid.
Every unit of electricity you generate through your solar PV system will earn you 21p simply because you have generated it (21p is the rate paid for any system up to 4kwp which is the vast majority of domestic systems.
As you begin to generate solar power, your electricity bill will be less and that depends on how much and when you use your electric i.e. washing machines/dryers, they can work during the day when you are generating free electricity.
A Solar panel system for an average house will cost £10-£15k. The new feed-in tariffs (FIT) are forecast to give an annual tax free return of 6-9%.

Feed-in Tariffs
The UK Feed-in Tariff Scheme (FIT) was launched in April 2010.
The tariffs are fixed to your property for 25 years. Every unit of electricity you generate through your solar panel system will earn you 21p because you have generated it - 21p is the rate paid for any system up to 4kwp. All FIT payments will be made by your electricity supplier. An additional payment for any excess electricity that is not used will be exported to the national grid, this payment is 3p per unit generated. |
